Computer classes for kids and adults at the Columbia Public Library (CPL)

The Columbia Public Library (CPL) has lots of regular computer classes! This week includes a program just for little ones. All classes are in the Training Room on the second floor except tonight’s class for children is in the Children’s Program Room (“the egg”). Also, everything below requires registration, except the children’s program and drop-in internet and computer assistance, by calling 573-443-3161.

Mon Nov 3, 6-6:30 pm: Digital Experiences and Your Young Child (ages 4-5). Register by calling 573-443-3161 and asking for the Children’s Desk.

Thu Nov 6, 2:30-4 pm: Facebook Fundamentals. Register.

Art & Creativity

Tue Nov 4, 7-9 pm: Creativity Speaks artist talk – The Influence of Handmade Pottery on Everyday Life by Yukari Kashihara. Imago Gallery has added to Columbia’s artist talks with a regular series called Creativity Speaks. The speaker is ceramicist Yukari Kashihara, who has pieces in the current show. See photo above.

Fri Nov 7, 5:30-8 pm: Opening Reception for the Columbia Weavers & Spinners Guild 25th Holiday Exhibition & Sale at the Boone County Historical Society Museum. The annual exhibition kicks off with this reception every year. This show has incredible fiber art and we highly recommend checking it out. If you cannot be at the reception, the show times are on the calendar.

Fri Nov 7, 6-9 pm: Artlandish Gallery First Friday event. On the first Friday of each month Artlandish hosts entertainment/performers in addition to spaces with over 60 artists’ work, tours of the Catacombs and North Village Art Studios, food, drink, and all around frivolity.

Sat Nov 8, 10 am-5 pm: KMOS Create Expo at Parkade Center features Vicki Payne, Host of the For Your Home show on PBS. The expo will have vendors and talks/workshops/demos.

Sat Nov 8, 11 am-2 pm: Writer’s Workshop in the lower level of The Mizzou Store in the MU Student Center. Same parking options as in the next listing.

Sat Nov 8, 1:30-2:30 pm: Art for a World at War Walk-Through at The State Historical Society of Missouri (SHSMO), which is next to Ellis Library off of Lowry Mall on the MU campus. Free parking is available in the MU parking garages, and some MU parking lots (the sign at the entrance to the lot will say if it is restricted on Saturdays).

Sat Nov 8, 6-8 pm: Art Reception for Give a Gift of Art Show at the Columbia Art League.

Sun Nov 9, 2-3 pm: Speaking of Culture series – Character Development: On Dungeons & Dragons and Becoming a Writer. Another wonderful local arts talk series; includes refreshements. Sponsored by the MU Honors College and held at Orr Street Studios.

Sun Nov 9, 2-3 pm: Access Arts Visiting Artist Lecture. And another wonderful local arts talk series! No artist has been published for this month’s talk—it is unconfirmed if this event is still scheduled. Check the calendar for updates.

Science

Wed Nov 5, 7-8 pm: Cosmic Conversations – Under Aboriginal Skies: The astronomy of Indigenous Australians. Location: 114 Physics Building, University of Missouri.

Sat Nov 8, 10:30-11:30 am (10am food): Saturday Morning Science – Excavating the Fortress at Ayn Gharandal, Jordan. Location: Monsanto Auditorium, Bond Life Sciences Center, University of Missouri. Free parking is available in the MU parking garages, and some MU parking lots (the sign at the entrance to the lot will say if it is restricted on Saturdays).

Sat Nov 8, 12-3 pm: Public Planetarium Shows – Columbia STEM Expo & Forces of Nature show at the planetarium in Rock Bridge High School. Interactive booths and displays celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) will be spread throughout the halls of Rock Bridge High School. During the Expo, the Columbia Public Schools’ (CPS) Planetarium will be showing “Forces of Nature,” which focuses on volcanoes, earthquakes, and tornadoes. Showtimes are 12:15, 1:15 and 2:15 pm, and seats are available first come, first served.

Movies

Wed Nov 5, 8-10:30 pm: Get On Up (2014) [PG-13] [2:18] in Wrench Auditorium, Memorial Union South, University of Missouri.

Thu Nov 6, 3-7 pm: 2nd Citizen Jane (CJ) Summit in Historic Senior Hall Recital Hall, Stephens College. This is a gathering of thought leaders from around the country to strategize on ways to address the challenges around the representation of women behind and in front of the camera. While this is not a movie per se, it is the only free portion of the Citizen Jane movie festival.

Fri & Sat, Nov 7 & 8, 7:00 and 9:30 pm showings each night: Tammy (2014) [R] [1:36] in Wrench Auditorium, Memorial Union South, University of Missouri. NOTE: There is a cost of $1 for this movie.

Fri Nov 7 at midnight: Mean Girls (2004) [PG-13] [1:36], in Wrench Auditorium, Memorial Union South, University of Missouri. Part of the new monthly midnight MU movie series.
