Highlights
Tue Nov 3—Election day and competing evening events!
6 am-7 pm: Election Day – The issue is the parks sales tax. Get out and vote!
5:30 pm: Columbia Independent School Open House (1801 N Stadium Blvd). These are generally held once a semester and if you are interested in alternatives to the public school system, check them out!
6 pm: Watch the Garden, with discussion following, hosted by the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture (CCUA) at Ragtag Cinema (10 Hitt St). While this is a fundraiser for their Planting for the Pantry Project with suggested donation of $10, donations are optional and everyone is welcome. See calendar notes for more info and free ticket policy. The City parking garage located diagonally across the street is free starting at 6 pm.
7 pm: Nicolette Hahn Niman will be speaking on her book, Defending Beef: The Case for Sustainable Meat Production in room 2-06 Agriculture Science Building (700 Hitt St) on the University of Missouri campus. Niman is an environmental lawyer and vegetarian who married cattle rancher and Niman Ranch founder Bill Niman, and ended up deep in the world of sustainable meat.
Wed Nov 4—Get in touch with your environmental side!
9 am: 1 Million Cups is held every Wednesday in Suite 105 of the Small Business Technology and Development Center offices (500 E Walnut St), and features a brief talk and Q&A with one or two up-and-coming local businesses. Great for entrepreneurs and anyone interested in learning about new local businesses! Unfortunately, no free parking is available at this time.
6:15 pm snacks (chips and guac, courtesy of Chipotle!) / 7 pm movie: See GMO OMG with discussion and panel following at 8:30 pm, in Jesse Auditorium, Jesse Hall (801 Conley Ave) on the University of Missouri campus. Filmmaker and concerned father Jeremy Seifert is in search of answers about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and how they affect our children, the health of our planet and our freedom of choice.
7-8:30 pm: Attend Climate Change Causes, Impacts, Solutions class—Effects On Public Health in 200 Waters Hall (1112 University Ave) on the University of Missouri campus. The Sierra Club—Osage Group co-sponsors this weekly class on Climate change which goes through Dec 9, 2015.
8-10 pm: Laws Observatory is open for viewing stars, planets and/or whatever else is interesting in the night sky. Take the elevator (or stairs if you want the exercise!) to the top floor of the University of Missouri Physics Building (701 S College Ave, behind the Bond Life Sciences Center), turn left and go up one more flight of stairs to the observatory. Someone from the Central Missouri Astronomical Association (CMAA) sets up the telescope and shares what is interesting the current night sky. The observatory is generally open every Wednesday night, and this week (as of this posting :), Wednesday is the last day that is forecast for clear skies before rainy weather on Thursday.

5 pm: Artist Lecture by Nathalie Miebach in Leadership Auditorium, University of Missouri Student Center (901 E Rollins St). Miebach translates scientific data from meteorology, oceanography, ecology, and musical scores into three-dimensional sculptural forms employing traditional basketry techniques. Miebach is a TEDGlobal 2011 Fellow. See the calendar notes about associated workshops, and email the contact person to get more info. Free parking is available at 5 pm in the University parking garages.
6:30-8 pm: Sweet Simplicity: Satisfying Choices that are Good for Your Pocketbook, Your Health and the Planet. Peaceworks Director Mark Haim will facilitate this program and discussion about a simpler lifestyle in the Friends Room at the Columbia Public Library (100 W Broadway).
Fri Nov 6
3-4 pm: Geology Seminar on The Importance of Fossils in Understanding the Evolution of Parasites and Their Vectors in room 108 of the Geology Building (400 S 6th St, on the Francis Quandrangle) on the University of Missouri campus. This talk could be heavy on the research side, but it is about fossils and sounds interesting! Unfortunately, no free parking is available at this time.
6-9 pm: First Friday in the North Village Arts District (downtown, Walnut Street from College to 9th and north to Rogers). Many venues listed, including Sager Braudis Gallery—Ramsay Wise (local artist) Special Exhibit Reception with beer from N.H. Scheppers Distributing Company and live music from Blu Earth.
Sat Nov 7—Lots more cool happenings this day…check the calendar!
9 am to 3 pm: KMOS Create Expo will be held again this year in the Parkade Center (601 Business Loop 70 W). This year, the Expo moved the hours a little earlier, and will be a little simpler—no registration. The celebrity guest presenters are Joe Lamp’l, Growing a Greener World, and Don Peschke, Woodsmith Shop. See the calendar notes (or KMOS Website) for the schedule of presentations and demonstrations. There will also be many local vendors to visit, and lots of great info!
10 am: The Historic Preservation Commission will conduct a Walking Tour on the Vocabulary of Architecture. To attend, meet at City Hall Key sculpture (701 E Broadway/8th & Broadway, downtown).
Nov 7-8
9 am or 10 am each day ($1 or free): See Shaun the Sheep at Forum 8 Theater (1209 Forum Katy Pkwy) as part of the FreeQuent FMG Movie Series. If you sign up for the free Goodrich Frequent Moviegoer Club (FMG) rewards program, you can attend the movies in this series for free, otherwise admission is $1. Inspired by and made in the style of Wallace and Gromit, this movie was made without any dialogue. FCMo Note: Do not miss this excellent movie—we have seen it and highly recommend it!

Barnes & Noble (2208 Bernadette Dr, Columbia Mall) is hosting a Mini Maker Faire in Partnership with Make: Magazine, and this event sounds awesome! Check the calendar notes for schedule info and links.

2 pm: Speaking of Culture series – Homer’s Handy Voting Guide: Using the Ancient Epics to Choose Our Next President at Orr Street Studios (106 Orr St). Speaking of Culture is a monthly series produced by the University of Missouri Honors College.
2 pm: Jewelry Tour at the Museum of Art and Archaeology in Mizzou North, 2nd Floor Galleries (115 W Business Loop 70). The first in a series of monthly themed art tours led by Museum docents.
