Highlights for Sep 10-16, 2018, as fall approaches and schools are back in session, the number of activities is ballooning! There are 64 events so far on the calendar this week. Remember, if you need more info, use the links and contact info for the event—sometimes details change before we can catch them.

Mon, Sep 10

6-7 pm: Science Café Columbia – The Power of Wind: Symbols and Science will be the topic at Broadway Brewery. Patrick Market, professor of meteorology at the University of Missouri, will bring his discussion on wind.

7-10 pm: Game Night at Craft Beer Cellar, has moved from Wednesday to Monday nights. Embrace your inner geek—complicated strategy games, Catan, and party games alike—their expansive game library has you covered or bring your own.

Tue, Sep 11

12-1 pm: 9/11 Peace Gathering will be held at the keyhole sculpture in front of City Hall to remember the lives lost and issue a collective call for peace and reconciliation. All are invited to participate for whatever portion of the hour works for you. The event will be held rain or shine. They will provide signs and banners, and you are welcome to bring your own.

7-8 pm: Big Muddy Speaker Series – Mississippi, Missouri, or Big Muddy: What’s in a Name? at Les Bourgeois Bistro. The Big Muddy series is back with St. Louis travel and mystery writer Dean Klinkenberg, speaking about the various ways we try to name rivers, why it matters, and what name should be used for the river that flows through St. Louis to the Gulf.

Wed, Sep 12

10-11 am: One Read Book Discussion With Author Laura McHugh at Barnes & Noble. Join author Laura McHugh, whose suspenseful novels “The Weight of Blood” and “Arrowood” include disappearances and unsolved murders, to discuss “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Coffee provided.

2-3 pm: Curator-Led Tour: Mid-Twentieth-Century Photography at the 2nd floor Modern Gallery of the Museum of Art and Archaeology. This rotation of modern and contemporary works on paper will be led by Alisa Carlson, Curator of European and American Art.

6-7 pm: Talking Pints Lecture – Managed Assisted Hunting for Disabled Veterans at Craft Beer Cellar. The Missouri Disabled Veterans Outdoors Foundation provides disabled veterans in Missouri opportunities to participate in a variety of outdoor activities that they may not be able to do on their own. This presentation will address how Lincoln University students are involved with assisting vets participate in hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities through free or extremely low cost programming, how interested veterans can also become involved (as participants or volunteers), and how you, too, can provide assistance to veterans in need.

6:30-11 pm: There are also three movies!…check the calendar for details.

Thu, Sep 13

5:30-6 pm: Spanish Story Time / Hora de cuentos en familia for kids ages 2-5 (with adult) at the Columbia Public Library. Stories and songs in Spanish presented by members of University of Missouri’s Voz Latina. A wonderful opportunity for children to experience Spanish.

Fri, Sep 14

5-8 pm: Show UR Ride (custom car show / gathering) at Creative Car Audio. This is a place to bring your friends, show your ride off, and enjoy the good vibrations from fantastic audio systems and new friends. Free swag will be available for those that attend and sign up via text. This is the second event of the year, and will be held rain or shine. Loud stereos not required! If you have put a little bit of yourself into your vehicle, bring it out. We love them in all shapes and sizes.

7:45-10 pm: The movie Sing (2016) [PG] [1:48] will be shown in Cosmos Park.

41st Heritage Festival & Craft Show, Sep 15-16, 2018.

Sat, Sep 15

10 am-5 pm: 41st Heritage Festival & Craft Show at Nifong Park. This festival features traditional and roots entertainment on three stages, reenactors, artisans and tradespersons dressed in 19th century attire demonstrating lost arts, and more. Fun for Young’uns Area includes stilts, paper pumpkins, milk the “cow,” rope making, candle dipping, candy in the haystack, and hayrides. The festival continues during the same times on Sunday.

6-8:30 pm: Another movie! See Peter Rabbit (2018) [PG] [1:35] at the Armory.

 Sun, Sep 16

1-4 pm: Bonsai Show in the Friends Room at the Columbia Public Library. This show is always amazing! Members of the Mid-Missouri Bonsai Society will have their Bonsai on display, and you can learn how to create your own.
