This remarkable evolutionary event was first highlighted by Charles Darwin as a scientific puzzle. To explore what led to the Cambrian explosion, scientists have investigated the Ediacaran Period (635-540 million years ago) in order to better understand the environmental and biological evolution at the transition. The speaker will showcase recent progress in Ediacaran paleobiological and paleoenvironmental studies, discuss the challenges in phylogenetic interpretations, and examine the potential roles of oxygenation in early animal evolution on the eve of the Cambrian explosion.
