Hello! Another week of fun, free (and almost free) events in Columbia. Everything is free except the $1 movies at Forum 8 Theater noted below. This week, there are 47 unique events on the calendar at the time of this posting. Details are in the notes of each event, and we are continually updating the calendar, so keep checking back. In addition, there are regularly scheduled events which can be found on the Regularly Available page. Highlights are noted below.
Movies
This week, Forum 8 Theater is showing Where the Wild Things Are. The summer movies are $1 per person, and show every weekday at 10 am.
On Fri, Jul 11, Mizzou is showing Rio 2 on Lowry Mall, with free food available about 8:15 pm. The food line can be long–we recommend getting there early if you want food. If it is rainy, the movie will be shown in the MU Student Center (on Rollins). Before the movie, from 6:30-8 pm, you can check out the Staycation: Boston event at Kuhlman Court (between the Student Center and Ellis Library)–a vacation to Boston without leaving Columbia. Boston-themed games and food will be provided.
At Ragtag this month on Wednesdays, The Crossing is sponsoring four films under the theme: Suspension of Disbelief. This week, on Wed, Jul 9, The Purple Rose of Cairo (dir. Woody Allen, 1985, 82 min) will be shown. Each showing will be followed by a discussion. The rest of the films are Jul 16–The Seventh Seal (Det Sjunde inseglet) (dir. Ingmar Bergman, 1957, 96 min.), Jul 23–O Brother, Where Art Thou? (dir. Joel Coen, 2000, 106 min.), and Jul 30–Unbreakable.
Music
This month’s Columbia Jazz Jam will be at The Bridge (downtown) on Tue, Jul 8, 8-11 pm.
The Stephens Lake Park Amphitheater Concert Series features the Community Band on Thu, Jul 10, at 7 pm. If you want to avoid or reduce the sun shining in your eyes, sit on the side toward the parking lot (west side) of the seating area.
Kids’ Events
As always, the Columbia Public Library has loads of events for kids, from age 0, and more for older kids for the summer. Many programs are related to the Summer Reading Program with a theme of science this year. This week’s offerings include Lessons of Animal Songs, The Science of Dragons, and What if…? (for kids). Some programs require registration. See the FCMo calendar for all the offerings with details in the description section.
Computer
The Columbia Public Library continues to offer lots of computer classes and training, including ReferenceUSA for Business and Information, Customize Your PC for Easy Viewing, Photoshop Elements Basics, and Downloading Made Easy. These classes require registration, plus they frequently offer Drop-In Internet and Computer Assistance. The computer/technology offerings are provided in the Training Center on the second floor. See the FCMo calendar for details.
Art
On Thu, Jul 10, at 3:30 pm, the MU Museum of Art & Archaeology (which is now located in Mizzou North, the building formerly known as Ellis Fischel Cancer Center), offers a class/workshop for kids (K-8) entitled “Pinch Me, I’m Dreaming!”. The kids learn about ceramic vessels and make their own pinch pots. Call 573-882-3591 to register.
Access Arts has the next Visiting Artist Lecture, featuring clay artist Bill Wilkey, on Sun, Jul 13, at 2 pm.
