The Barnes and Noble 19th Summer Reading Program—Imagination’s Destination began May 19, and goes through September 7, 2015. This program is for kids of ages corresponding to grades 1-6. To participate, stop by Barnes & Noble (2208 Bernadette Dr, in Columbia Mall) and pick up the Reading Journal form, or print the Reading Journal (PDF) yourself. Educators can download the Activities and Teaching Tips Kit as an additional resource.

To participate:

  • Kids (with or without the assistance of their parents, as needed) read and record any eight books that they have read, and their comments / recommendation for each book.
  • Once complete, bring your form to the store by or on September 7, 2015, and the child can choose his / her book from the Program books (listed on the Journal) (and depending on available stock in the store).

The 2015 Summer Reading Program at the Columbia Public Library began on June 1, and goes through August 15, 2015. This year, the theme for both the kid and adult programs is “Every hero has a story”. Enjoy a summer of super heroes (and everyday heroes) through books and programs.

For kids, sign up at the Columbia Public Library (100 W Broadway) or at a bookmobile stop. When kids complete the program for their age group, they can pick up their free book beginning July 6, 2015. The activities vary according to age:

For birth to age 5: Read with your child 30 days throughout the summer and do simple activities like playing, drawing or singing together. Complete the program and you will receive a free book. You will also be entered into a drawing for other fun rewards.

For ages 5-12: Kids will be challenged to read for 20 hours and do 10 of the suggested activities. Visit the library to show your progress, attend programs, and check out more books. You will also be entered into a drawing for other fun rewards.

For ages 12-18: Teens will be challenged to read for 20 hours, share three book reviews, and do seven of the suggested activities. You will also be entered into a drawing for some other fun rewards including a Kindle eReader (black and white).

To participate in Summer Reading for Grown-Ups, sign up online or in person at the library (100 W Broadway) or on the bookmobile. As a summer reader you will be entered into weekly drawings for book store gift cards. Participants are encouraged to submit book reviews for the books they read. With each review, your name will be entered into a weekly book store gift card drawing—the more reviews you submit, the better your chance of winning! The best of the reviews will be featured on DBRL Next. In addition to reading and submitting reviews, you can participate in the related library programs.

There is also a Group Summer Reading Program for child care centers, clubs, etc. Sign up at your library, at a bookmobile stop, or at www.dbrl.org/summergroups. This is a special version of Summer Reading that is easy to do with a small group of kids like a child care class or a scout troop. When you complete eight of the suggested activities together, your group will receive some free books, and every participant will receive a small reward.
